Small Dishwashers Reviewed

Small dishwashers are ideal for modern apartments or houses that have only a tiny kitchen or even just a small kitchen-like area integrated into the living area. They fit in conveniently enough and will not occupy a lot of space. They are ideal for a single or retiree household or can even be used in an RV, or on board a boat, to convey a real sense of beiong at home!

There are many manufacturers offering small dishwashers that can be integrated as built-in models or placed on top of the counter as a portable model.
Popular choices are Danby countertop dishwasher, Bosch, Equator, Haier, Kenwood, Micromark Coolzone, Matsui, Proline, Vesta and Zanussi.

Mini Maid Dishwasher

The Mini Maid PLS 602S from Equator is 19.5 inches high, so slightly bigger than other small dishwasher brands, but it holds 8 place settings. Its annual energy consumption is only  249 kWh.

The two powerful spray arms are situated at the top and bottom and they make sure that a fair-sized load comes out spotless and clean. The dish rack can be pulled out and it contains a separate silverware basket as well.

Connection to a faucet is convenient and easy via a quick connection faucet adapter and hoses for fresh water and drainage are included. The whole unit comes at est. $ 725 plus shipping cost at est. $50.

Vesta Small Dishwasher

The Vesta portable dishwasher can be placed on top of the counter or installed as a built-in dishwasher.
The dimensions of this small dishwasher are 22.375"W x 17.875"H x 19.375"D or 56.83 x 45.4 x 49.2 cm. Water consumption depends on the chosen washing cycles and is between 3.2 – 9.6 L (0.84 – 3.3 Gallon).

It comes with a stainless steel tub and one spray arm. You can load up to four 4-piece place settings at once.
There are 3 wash cycles with options for 2 temperature levels available: normal, short and rinse only. The Sani –rinse option heats water up to 151 F (66 C), which kills most germs and harmful bacteria.

Two installation options are available: the direct connection to the faucet leaves it on top of the counter. A separately-sold installation kit gives you the possibility to install and integrate it into a cabinet and hide the hoses.

This small dishwasher has got a built-in safety door mechanism and a double-overflow control sensor. Est. price is around $400, plus the quick-connect hose kit and custom host kit are approx. $20 each, whilst the installation trim kit retails at $30. For the built-in option you will need to buy the custom hose kit and the installation trim kit.

Budget Buys

The Proline PDW041 is a compact dishwasher that is C rated for energy (0.71 kWh/ cycle) and water consumption (12.8 L/cycle in Normal cycle) and drying performance. Dimensions are 47 x 57 x 48 cm (H/W/D), noise emission is at 60 db. It comes in White and can load 4 place settings at once. (1 place setting comprises of a dinner plate, a soup bowl, a saucer, a side plate, 5 pieces of flatware, a cup, and a glass.)

There are 5 wash cycles washing at two different, manually adjustable temperature levels: a normal, short (35 min) for lightly soiled loads, economy (uses water at a lower temperature), a pre-rinse cycle and a half load cycle.
Dishes are dried with a residual drying system that uses the heat from the final rinsing water.
This is fairly economical, but dishes are not completely dry at the end.

It has got an indicator for the rinse-aid dispenser, the salt dispenser and an automatic reminder for adding salt. It indicates even the cycle progress.
The heating element is hidden and concealed in the bottom of the machine, so you or your childrendon't run the risk of getting burnt or hurt at the end of a cycle, when touched accidentally while it is still hot.
The price is est. £140... a very low retail price for a basic but reasonably reliable product.

Consumers are generally fairly satisfied with this small dishwasher, as it is a cheap buy and does wash dishes satisfactorily clean economically in a short time (around 30 minutes, depending on cycle). Dishes are found to be clean, but not totally dry.

People find it difficult to refill the salt and rinse aid. The rinse aid needs to be filled with a little container into a compartment inside on the back wall of the machine and salt needs to be spooned into a container inside on the right wall. Both, mini salt scoop and rinse aid refill device, are provided with the dishwasher.
The layout of the rack seems to be a little impractical and consumers need to get used to this first.

Coolzone Small Dishwasher

Another budget table top dishwasher is the Coolzone MK51065 from Micromark.
This retails at est. £145 pounds and is good for a tighter budget.

Its dimensions are 48.3 x 45.7 x 45.7 cm (W/D/H) and it weighs 20 kg.
Rating for energy efficiency is C, for cleaning performance B and for drying performance C. It is fairly economical, especially if used in a 1– 2 person household.

It holds 4 place settings and washes at two different temperature levels in 4 wash programs: normal, quick wash (35 min), extra rinse and intensive wash.
A delay timer lets you set a cycle to a time convenient for you.
The LCD display of the electronic control panel is located on the bottom underneath the door and is well visible.

Consumers who own this brand are generally satisfied and agree that this is one of the cheapest models. This dishwasher's  cleaning was rated from 'really well' to 'excellent'. Even the quick cycle washes everything clean, but you will need to remove food remains or pre-rinse heavily dirty dishes first manually.

Loading and handling is easy. However the racks are not adjustable or removable and tines are not able to be folded down.
Durability of this small dishwasher is a weak point and it is somewhat noisy.
